ePaper Display Module FAQs

What is a ePaper Display?

An ePaper display (also known as an electronic paper or e-ink display) is a type of reflective screen designed to mimic the look of real paper. Instead of using a backlight like LCDs, it relies on tiny microcapsules filled with black and white (or colored) charged particles that move when an electric field is applied, forming visible text or images.

One of its key features is bi-stability — meaning the screen can hold an image even when power is turned off. This makes ePaper extremely energy-efficient, as it only consumes power when updating the display.

They are available in monochrome (black & white) and color versions with 3, 4, or even 6 pigments for richer visual output.

What are the advantages of ePaper displays?

ePaper display screens offer ultra-low power consumption, wide temperature operation, and long service life. They retain images without power, making them ideal for battery-powered devices. With high visibility under sunlight, wide viewing angles, and easy integration with platforms like Raspberry Pi or ESP32, ePaper is perfect for industrial instruments, smart labels, and IoT applications.

What’s the application of ePaper displays

ePaper displays are widely used in applications where low power consumption, sunlight readability, and long-term visibility are important. Common uses include:

  • Retail & Pricing:Electronic shelf labels (ESL), price tags, and product signage.
  • Industrial & Logistics:Control panels, meters, inventory tracking, and status indicators.
  • Smart Office & Conference:Nameplates, room schedules, and digital notice boards.
  • IoT & Wearables:Battery-powered devices, sensors, and portable information displays.
  • E-Readers & Education:Digital books, learning devices, and information tablets.

With options in monochrome ePaper and color ePaper, and sizes ranging from small handheld displays to large panels, ePaper technology provides flexible solutions across industries.

What’s the difference between ePaper and LCD display?

ePaper is ideal for low-power, sunlight-readable, and static content applications, while LCDs are better suited for dynamic content and video.
